Lutherhaus
Luther Memorials
- UNESCO world heritage since 1996
When Martin Luther published his 95 theses against the abuse of indulgences in Wittenberg in 1517, the Reformation, the idea of a church devoted to the people, took its starting point here.
During the Renaissance, Wittenberg became a centre of humanistic ideals in Germany. Luther found an enthusiastic comrade in Philipp Melanchthon. The artist, Lucas Cranach the Elder, worked in the town for many years.
In 1534 Hans Lufft printed the first complete edition of Luther's Bible in German at Wittenberg. To date, visitors encounter the testimonies of this time and experience a touch of Renaissance in the marketplace, in the streets, museums and churches of Wittenberg.
