Lucas Cranach the Elder came to Wittenberg in the year 1505 and worked as a painter at the court of Frederick the Wise. His talent as painter and businessman allowed him after a few years to built up a spacious property at Schlossstrasse No.1, where he opened his famous Cranach School of Painting, a print workshop and a pharmacy. Cranach witnessed the construction of the castle church, the magnificent Renaissance town hall and the Leucorea University. In 1537 Lucas Cranach became mayor of the city.
