Schloss Georgium
Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom
- UNESCO world cultural heritage site since 2000
In the second half of the 18th Century, significant stimuli came from this region. Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, who strived for a harmonious connection between people and nature, landscaped the Dessau-Wörlitz garden kingdom together with his comrades. During his period of rule, Anhalt-Dessau was seen as a place of enlightenment in Germany.
The Dessau-Wörlitz garden kingdom is the birthplace of landscape gardening, classicism and neo-gothic in Germany. Six park areas and numerous small architectural pieces are integrated in the meadows and forests of the Elbe and Mulde, so that they give the whole landscape the character of a park with extensive spaces.
