Dessau-Roßlau
Dessau, the former residential city of the State of Anhalt, has a wealth of tradition. The city gained international significance through the Bauhaus, opened as a College for Design by Walter Gropius in 1926. Since 1994, the Bauhaus building has been home to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, which maintains and conveys the heritage of the historic Bauhaus as a place of research, education and design as well as making its own contribution to designing the current living environment.
The history of Dessau is inseparably connected with lots of famous names. Moses Mendelssohn, Wilhelm Müller and Kurt Weill were born here. Oechelhaeuser built the first gas engines here and Junkers built the first full-metal aircraft.
Roßlau made its name as an inland port. One of the most important buildings in Roßlau is the water tower which originates from the 12th Century.
