The Bauhaus Building and Masters’ Houses

- UNESCO world cultural heritage site since 1996

In 1925/26, Walter Gropius not only arranged for the famous Bauhaus building in Dessau to be erected, but also the small settlement of masters’ houses where artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger lived and worked.

Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau due to political reasons. The building found a new use as a College for Design. Dessau became a centre for modern design.

The drafts for the Bauhaus building paved the way for modern classic design. In addition to the Bauhaus building and the Masters’ houses, the town also has a range of other historic buildings.
