The Lutheran Town of Wittenberg
In the old town of Wittenberg, visitors can enjoy the flair of Reformation and Renaissance: The All Saints’ Church with the world famous commemorative theses doors, the Cranach Courtyards, the City Church, Luther’s Sermon Church with the Cranach Altar and, last but not least, the Houses of Luther and Melanchthon. The Wittenberg old town: a unique open-air museum!
Martin Luther lived here since 1511 at the Augustinian monastery. The living room in Luther’s house is still kept in its original state today. All Lutheran sites in Wittenberg are UNESCO world heritage sites. The revived university is bringing cosmopolitan life back to the town. Another highlight is the grammar school redesigned by the famous Viennese artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Wittenberg’s picturesque surroundings invite visitors to enjoy walking and cycling tours. The R2 Elbe cycle path, extending from Dresden to Hamburg, also passes through Wittenberg. Wittenberg invites you to celebrate Luther's Wedding in June, the pottery market in September or Reformation Day in October.
